Appalachian Trail
Blue Ridge Mountains
Black Rock Mountain State Park was established in 1952 and originally consisted of 1,000 acres.  Before the park was established, John V. Arrendale, a native of Rabun County, began assembling the area that would later become a park. He made his first purchase of 70- acres in 1938. The park has grown over time and in 1995 the Preservation 2000 program funded by Governor Zell Miller made a purchase of 301 acres.

The park's history is also connected to Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program. The CCC was instrumental in land acquisition and park development and the park is now 1743 acres.

Black Rock Mountain State Park has the highest elevation in Georgia and has some of the most outstanding scenery in the Blue Ridge Mountains. At an altitude of 3,640 feed, the park is often cooler than other Georgia parks and may close during icy weather.  On a clear day four states can be seen: Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

The park offers a variety of camping experiences. It has a 44-site campground featuring water, electricity and cable TV hookups for recreational vehicles. There are also 12 isolated walk-in tent sites in Hickory Cove on the mountain's southeastern slope. On the park's westernmost ridge are ten rental cottages and Camp Tsatu-gi, a primitive pioneer campsite designed for use by organized groups

We camped here in July 2023 on site #23 in our Coachmen Beyond Van. I wouldn’t recommend this site for a pull behind trailer as it would be hard to back in to but just fine for our van. RVers should be comfortable driving on steep, winding roads.

We hiked to the little falls and to the visitor center. Mike was recovering from surgery and couldn’t do a long hike. Cool morning and even cooler nights. We never turned on the A/C. We had 3 bars t-mobile - excellent signal. The lake is a short distance from the camping area.
DIRECTIONS:
From Atlanta: Take I-85N to I-985N.
Remain on 4 lane through Tallaulah Falls and on US 441N through Clayton.
3 miles N Of Clayton, in Mountain City, turn left onto Black Rock Mountain Parkway.
Steep mountain road to the park.
Highway conditions may be hazardous in winter months.
