Dreher Island State Park covers 348 acres and provides access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline. The park spans three islands and is one of the Midland's most cherished natural sanctuaries. The land was first leased from SCE&G (now SCANA) in 1970, who build the Dreher Shoals Dam. This created Lake Murray, a reservoir of the Saluda River. The park is named after the former owner of the island, Billy Dreher.
We camped here in October 2021 and really enjoyed this quiet beautiful park. The lake is beautiful and we loved walking the shoreline. Many national fishing tournaments are held here and we were lucky enough to see a fishing tournament weigh-in. We enjoyed hiking the trails. The shorter, Billy Dreher Nature Trail is an easy walk that leads to the original home site of the park's namesake. The ruins of his home can be found at the end of the loop trail. There are 13 large picnic pavilions throughout the park. The shelters can be reserved for $30 - $38 a day. If they are not reserved, they can be used on a first-come basis for free. Five fully furnished villas are along the shoreline of one of the island's peninsulas. You have use of a dock reserved exclusively for villa guests. |
