In the 1930s, Hunting Island was developed into a state park by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Bridges were being constructed to connect the outer sea Islands with Beaufort. The most notable attraction is the 19th-century lighthouse, built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after being destroyed in the Civil War. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not operational but features a rotating light in the tower that is turned on at night. Severe beach erosion made it necessary to relocate the lighthouse 1.3 miles inland in 1889.
In 1993, most of the Vietnam War scenes in Forrest Gump were filmed on Hunting Island and neighboring Fripp Island. Parts of G.I. Jane were also filmed in forests on the island in 1997. The Nature Center is located next to the fishing pier and features live reptiles and exhibits highlighting the park's natural resources. The center is closed on Sunday and Monday. We camped here in November 2021 and loved riding our bikes and walking on the beach. This is really a beautiful park and would love to return. There are five miles of South Carolina Beaches and thousands of acres of marsh and maritime forest, a saltwater lagoon and ocean inlet in the park. This park is one of South Carolina's most popular parks. |
