Edisto Beach State Park was created on land donated in 1935 by the Edisto Company. The park was one of the first South Carolina state parks and was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Many of the original buildings built by the CCC still stand and are in use today.
The Beach Campground in the park is situated between a saltmarsh and the beach and a short walk or bike ride takes you into the small town for groceries or dinner. A large day use area is a wonderful place for a picnic at the beach. The Live Oak Campground is a mile from town and situated next to a saltmarsh. The roads are a little narrow with lots of trees for shade. We camphosted and stayed in the Live Oak CG for the month of September. There are seven cabins located in the campground completely furnished with a screened-in porch to enjoy the park. The Environmental Learning Center is close by and a great way to learn more about the area. Be sure to sign up for the Loggerhead Turtle walks during the nesting season. We loved watching the turtle experts check the nest for any remaining turtles and then setting them free in the ocean. There is plenty to do on the island visiting the Botany Bay Plantation, Edisto Island Museum, biking on the trail or a day visit to Charleston. Be sure to stock up before heading to the island. There is a small Bi-Lo in town but Wal-Mart is a 45-mile drive. The water here is very salty and not drinkable. Thankfully the town furnishes each home with 5 gal of water per day at the Water Station. They do not furnish containers so save your gallon jugs for refills. DIRECTIONS:
The park is located 50 miles SE of Charleston on SC Hwy 174 on Edisto Island. From Hwy 17 take Hwy 174 approx 28 miles. Live Oak Campground and Cabins located on the right on State Cabin Road. Beach Campground and Day Use located on the left upon entering the town limits. |
