NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Providence Canyon

Florence Marina State Park sits at the northern end of Lake Walter F. George (also called Lake Eufaula). The park is on the site of the frontier town of Florence, which was originally named Liverpool, after the English port city. Florence was once a prosperous town before a flood washed away the bridge connecting the town to Alabama. The town went into decline after the flood and was bypassed by the railroad. It was officially incorporated as a town from 1837 until 1995.

The Kirbo Interpretive Center showcases area wildlife and plants, local history and Native Americans, including artifacts from the prehistoric Paleo-Indian period through the early 20th century. The park is adjacent to a natural deep-water marina with a fishing pier, boat slips and boat ramp.

We enjoyed this park and spent three nights here in February 2020. There’s a 3/4 mile nature trail and biking throughout the park.

Visiting Providence Canyon State Park is a must if you are in this area.
