The Holder Mine Campground is located within the Holder Mine Recreation Area, in the Citrus Tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest. Withlacoochee is an Indian word meaning “crooked river,” which describes the river as it makes its 70-mile journey from the Green Swamp in northern Polk County to the Gulf of Mexico at Yankeetown.
Many day-use facilities are available throughout the forest for picnicking and wildlife viewing. The Croom Motorcycle Area provides a developed campground and 2,600 acres of off-road trails for motorcycle and ATVs. We camped here for two nights in February 2019 and enjoyed the quiet area and walking in the woods. There are lots of shade trees, deer, and birds. We would return to explore the trails. DIRECTIONS FROM INVERNESS FL:
From State Road 44 in Inverness FL, turn south at the traffic light at Applebee's on Pleasant Grove Road (C-581). Drive approximately 2.5 miles (passing the fire tower) to Forest Road (Trail 10). Turn right (west) on Forest Road (Trail 10) and continue approximately 2 miles to Holder Mine Recreation Area and Campground. Note: do not rely on GPS directions. |
