This forest was named in honor of the famous Seminole Indian warrior, Osceola and created by President Herbert Hoover’s proclamation on July 10, 1931. The forest is home to many species including the American alligator, the Florida black bear and the red-cockaded woodpecker.
The campground is located on the north side of Ocean Pond, a 1,760-acre natural lake. When entering the campground the loop on the right is for water/elec sites and to the left are the water only paved sites and then further in are the primitive sites in the woods. We camped here in December 2015 on site #6. It was not the best site for viewing the water but we only stayed for a week and felt fortunate to get a site with water/elec. The camp is very quiet this time of year and the cats really enjoyed their walks in the evening. A 23 mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail winds its way through the forest. The trail will pass through the Olustee Battlefield site where Confederate soldiers pushed back Union troops in route to Tallahassee. A reenactment of this historic event is held each February. Hunting is allowed in the forest from mid November to early January. Be very careful hiking during this time. DIRECTIONS FROM LAKECITY:
