Rockhound State Park is located in the remote southwest corner of New Mexico. The park is built on the rugged west slope of the Little Florida Mountains and is a favorite for "rockhounds" It was established in 1966 as the first state park in the US where you are encouraged to pick up and take home the rocks. There is an abundance of agates and quartz crystals found in the park.
There is a 1.1 mile loop path that runs over the lower slopes from either side of the campground. This is a great walk as you look for gems along the way. We camped here in March 2018 after visiting White Sands National Monument. This was a great 3 night stop on our way to California. We enjoyed riding our bikes and walking. You cannot visit Deming, NM and not stop to eat at The Adobe Deli. The food is absolutely delicious even though the service is slow. It just doesn't matter. If you're not looking for it, you will miss this little place sitting in the middle of nowhere at 3970 Lewis Flats Road in Deming, NM. DIRECTIONS FROM DEMING NM:
Travel five miles south of Deming on NM 11. Then east on NM 141/Rockhound Road for about nine miles to the park. |
