Sawnee Campground is a Corp of Engineer park on Lake Sidney Lanier. The reservoir was created in 1956 with the completion of Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River. Sawnee Campground lies just north of the Buford Dam and features beautiful views of the lake. The lake was named for the poet, Sidney Lanier, and is well known for its aqua-blue colored water and recreational activities.
Sawnee is one of the few campgrounds open all winter. We camphosted here in the winter of 2016-17 and enjoyed seeing the leaves change and meeting people from all over the US seeking warmer weather. This may change for the winter of 2018 so check their website for updates on closing for the winter. The campground is easy for big rigs and sites are level. There are two loops for camping with a lake view and one loop with shade trees. The primitive camping is on a point with gorgeous views of the lake. DIRECTIONS FROM ATLANTA:
