The Coronado National Forest was named for Fancisco Vasquez de Coronado, who journeyed in 1540 to the Zuni and Hopi villages through part of lands known today as the Coronado National Forest.

Stewart Campground is one of three lower Cave Creek Campgrounds. They are located on the Cave Creek/Portal-to-Paradise scenic drive. There are only 6 campsites here and it's first come first served. The campground is a circle with woods on one side and the creek on the other side.

Idlewild Campground was closed while we were camping, but we toured Sunny Flat Campground and it's very nice with a few amenities such as paved roads. It's more open and sunny. There is a camp host at Sunny Flat.

We camped in Stewart Campground in March 2018 and it was so peaceful being by the creek and in the woods.  Payment is on the honor system at the kiosk as you enter the park. I suggest stopping at the visitor center for information about the area and a map especially if you enjoy hiking and birdwatching.

We stopped at the Chiricahua Desert Museum in Portal on the way to the campground. It's really a great place to see the desert animals and plants and to buy art from local artists.

NOTE:  Black bears are in this area and lf forecasts indicate rainfall of 1 1/2" or greater, campground will be evacuated due to flood danger.
