In 1954 Georgia opened White County Area State Park and the credit for the 278-acre park was given to Charlie Maloof, a local businessman and politician. In 1957 the park became known as Unicoi State Park & Lodge. The park is now 1,050 acres with a 53-acre lake named Unicoi Lake on Smith Creek.

The park is just north of the Alpine town of Helen and has something to offer to everyone. We cannot give a review of the lodge or cabins because we were there to camp and hike.

We camped here in August 2018 in our Travato van and enjoyed being in the mountains. This is an older park and the sites are a little close together, but there are 5 campgrounds offering either full hook-ups, elec & water or tent only sites. This is a very kid friendly park with a beach for swimming, zip lining or tubing down the river. There is no tv reception but we had a great T-Mobile cell signal and there is wifi at the lodge. We enjoyed bluegrass music on Saturday night and getting together with neighbors. Church service is offered on Sunday mornings.

There are four hiking trails and one mountain bike trail (8 miles). All trails begin at the Conference Center's upper parking lot but may also be picked up throughout the park. We hiked the  2.5 mile Unicoi Lake Trail taking us around the lake and crossing through the beach area.
