NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Augusta

Winfield is located on Georgia’s Little River on Lake Strom Thurmond also known as Clarks Hill Lake.  This lake is a reservoir at the border between Georgia and South Carolina in the Savannah River Basin and is the largest Corps of Engineer Lake east of the Mississippi River.

We stayed here on site #10 in August 2015 and enjoyed the peace and quiet of the woods. We were able to launch our inflatable boat from our site to fish and the lake is fantastic. Mistletoe State Park is only a few miles away and has great hiking trails. There’s plenty of bike riding throughout the campground but no hiking trails. Most of the sites are on water with beautiful views and very private. The park is very woodsy with lots of shade trees giving a feeling of being in the woods.

We drove into Appling, GA and was surprised to see a courthouse and church. There is nothing else in Appling, GA. The nearest town for groceries and fast food is Thomson about 12 miles away but we prefer going to Evans (20 miles) for more choices.

The week we camped here there were very few people in the campground, but I understand it is packed during the week of the Master’s and on holidays. We have enjoyed camping and not seeing any neighbors.

DIRECTIONS FROM I-20:

Take Exit 175 (Hwy 150) north and travel 7.5 miles.
Turn left onto Mistletoe Road and travel 1.5 miles.
Turn left onto Winfield Road and travel approx 1.5 miles to campground.
