Beach Hikes

11/24/2014

We have taken several walks along the beaches on Okaloossa Island. A couple on designated National Seashore areas. Even in the winter, there are  sights to see. Of course the big pastime when hiking on the beach is people watching and bird watching. Herons are abundant in Florida along with the various gulls. It is really interesting to watch the wind surfers and kites. Now that looks like fun, but probably a little too much for this old body,

When hiking on sand, three miles can feel like six. Sometimes walking on soft sand can take a toll on your back so be careful.

Central Vac

Recently, we had trouble with our central vac. It would not shut off!! The way our Eureka Yellow Jacket works is as follows. One feature allows you to slide a gate up, which completes a circuit and turns the vacuum on so you can sweep dust up to it to be sucked into the bag. The other way is to insert the hose which has  a metal band that makes contact inside the gate to turn the vacuum on. These contacts are wired to a small circuit board inside the vacuum unit. When the contacts to the circuit board are closed ( gate up or hose inserted) it allows 120vac to go to the unit and turn it on.

Our problem with the vacuum not shutting off when the gate is closed or the hose pulled out meant the contacts in the circuit board were melted closed. One would think you could just replace the circuit board, but noooo! The board is enclosed in the motor housing so you have to replace the whole unit. Luckily it was under warranty, but we still had to pay a mobile RV service fifty dollars to take care of it. Live and learning as we go along.

Food, Fun and Friends

PictureBBQ with Steve and Wanda

The BBQ at Steve and Wanda's was great. They had pulled pork, ribs and fries and the guests brought side dishes. It was a cold night and Steve's propane fire ring was a welcome addition to the atmosphere. There was good conversation and telling of jokes.

The next night we got together for smores and hot chocolate.

PictureRoast and all the fixings at Donnie and Kathy's

Last night we all met at Donnie and Kathy's for a great southern home cooked meal. Roast, potatoes, cream corn, corn bread etc. This was their last night here before heading home to Alabama.

Our new RV friends have certainly made our stay a lot of fun.

Destin West RV Resort

PictureDewey Destin's Seafood
We have been at Destin West RV Resort since October 30th. It is very nice having cable, wifi and a steady phone signal. The wifi has been fairly good. We haven't tried using it for Netflix yet. The T Mobile and Verizon signals have been very good. We watch Netflix on T Mobile. The cable is very good, but reminds me why we discontinued at home.

We have used the fitness room at the Ramada. It's good to have use of it, but needs updating in the worst way. I have not been brave enough to jump in the pool, but have been told they keep it at 85 degrees so maybe I'll try it when the outdoor temperature is in the 70's.

Long hikes on the beach have been nice. We did take a short bike ride through a park and a little ways down Santa Rosa Blvd. We will be venturing out more in the future.

Last night we ate at Dewey Destin's Seafood. The food was good and we had a view of the water and marina.

Tonight we are looking forward to a barbecue with some of our RV neighbors.

Until next time.
